There has been significant recent progress in optimization of UL listed Halotron I wheeled units which has resulted in increased effectiveness, stream reach, and coverage under NFPA standards. The first UL listed Halotron I wheeled units were available in 1999. The recent development efforts have focused upon hardware optimization with fire testing occurring at AMPAC’s fire test facility in Cedar City, Utah. This work resulted in significantly higher UL Class B ratings and hardware optimization on multiple units that provide longer hose lengths and longer stream reach.

The hose length for all UL listed 150 lb. wheeled extinguishers is now 50 ft. This is a full 25% longer than the 40 ft. hose used on selected models previously.

Two 150 lb. units that were listed at 10A:80B:C are now listed at 10A:120B:C with no increase in charge weight. The increase from 80B to 120B represents an additional 50% pool fire surface area that can be extinguished. Fires were extinguished repeatedly with significant reserve time (>20 seconds). These 150 lb. units are often used for aircraft protection. The improvements increase the effectiveness over the original UL listings and also help by satisfying additional NFPA 418 criteria for Heliports. The new rating meets the UL rating requirements for a Category H-2 Heliport. This provides protection for larger helicopters, up to 30 feet longer in length than covered under the H-1 category.

One 65 lb. unit is now rated at 4A:80B:C which was previously rated at 4A:60B:C. This increase from 60B to 80B represents an additional 33% pool fire surface area that can be extinguished. The reduced charge weight meets the minimum 4A:80B:C rating specified for aircraft fueling, under NFPA 407. It also meets requirements under NFPA 410 for aircraft servicing, which requires a minimum 80B:C rating for protection of airport ramp areas and for backup extinguishers when conducting certain operations. This new 4A:80B:C rating meets these requirements at roughly half the cost as before (where a 150 lb. charge weight was required). Another 65 lb. unit is now rated at 4A:60B:C which was previously rated at 4A:40B:C.
